Doctrine of God #4-Bible Doctrine

THE EXISTENCE OF GOD

1.The bible does not attempt to prove the existence of God; it simple declares it.

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

2. Belief in the existence of God is absolutely foundational not only to an understanding of the Bible but to life itself.

Heb 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.

3. Nothing can be received or known of god unless one believes in His existence.  Faith is the only connecting link between the creator and the creature, God and man.

Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

4. God has given us visible proofs of His existence; there is no excuse for not believing in His existence.

Romans 1:20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.

Psalms 53:1 the fool has said in his heart, "There is no God," They are corrupt, and have committed abominable injustice; There is no one who does good.

THE CHRISTIAN VIEW OF GOD

CAUSE AND EFFECT [COSMOLOGICAL ARGUMENT]

Argues from the law of cause and effect. The world is here, how did it get here? All things must be traced from the cause [which is God]
Gen 1:1 [in the beginning God]
Psalms 19:1-6; the heavens are telling of the glory of God
Rom 1;19-20; because that which is known about God is evident within them
HEB 11:3; 3  By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God
Heb 1:1-2these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world

THE WORLD HAS PERFECT DESIGN [TELEOLOGICAL ARGUMENT]

  • Not only doest the World exist but also it has perfect design.
  • Each blade of grass and snowflake has a different yet perfect design and they exist in harmony with one another.
  • This design suggests a designer.
  • Could there be a building with a builder a watch with out a watch make?

MAN MASTER PIECE OF GOD’S CREATION [ANTHROPOLOGICAL ARGUMENT]

  • Man is the Master piece of God’s creation.  He was made in the image of God to be the crowning glory of all creation.

Genesis 1:1-28 . . . ." 27And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28And God blessed them; and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth."

Psalms 94:9 He who planted the ear, does He not hear?  He who formed the eye, does He not see?
  • The finest Ape can’t compare with man in his total being.

  • The superior intelligence of man is one of the greatest argument that a creator exists.

MAN HAS INTUITIVE BELIEF [ONTOLOGICAL ARGUMENT]

[Intuitive speaks of knowing something without the process of reasoning.]

  • Man is created and intelligent with a intuitive belief and knowledge of the existence of God.

  • There is a desire in every man to worship something.

  • There is a universal knowledge and desire to worship God or gods in every people group and nation in the world.

Acts 17:23-24
"For while I was passing through and examining the objects of your worship, I also found an altar with this inscription, 'TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.

Romans 1:18-32
. . . . 19because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. . . .

John 1:3-7
All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being . . . . .

AN INNER SENSE OF RIGHT AND WRONG [MORAL ARGUMENT]

·         Man possesses a inner sense of right and wrong as well as a sense of responsibility to adhere to what is right and avoid the wrong.

·         Man has a god given conscience.

·         A conscience can be trained not to be sensitive to the voice of God but its existence proves God exists.

Romans 2:14

For when Gentiles who do not have the Law do instinctively the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law to themselves,

Romans 2:15

in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness, and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them,

1 Tim. 4:2

by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron,

Titus 1:15

To the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.

Hebrews 9:14

How much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

John 8:9

And when they heard it, they began to go out one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the midst

LIFE CAN ONLY COME FROM PRE-EXISTENT LIFE [BIOLOGICAL ARGUMENT]

  • It is a scientific fact that life can only come from pre-existent life, and not from matter alone.

  • Trace all life back to its source you always come back to God.

Psalm 36:9
For with Thee is the fountain of life; In Thy light we see light.

John 11:25
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me shall live even if he dies,

John 14:6
Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me.

John 10:28
and I give eternal life to them, and they shall never perish; and no one shall snatch them out of My hand.

John 1:1-5
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. 4In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

HISTORY POINTS TO A HUMAN HAND GUIDING [HISTORICAL ARGUMENT]

  • History points to a human hand guiding, governing and controlling the destinies of the nations.

  • Babylon, Persia, Greece, Rome, etc.

Isaiah 45:1-5
. . . Thus says the Lord to Cyrus His anointed, Whom I have taken by the right hand, To subdue nations before him, . ..  . .
Daniel 5: 18"
O king, the Most High God granted sovereignty, grandeur, glory, and majesty to Nebuchadnezzar your father.
Rev. 17:17
"For God has put it in their hearts to execute His purpose by having a common purpose, and by giving their kingdom to the beast, until the words of God should be fulfilled.

THE CHRIST OF HISTORY [CHRISTOLOGICAL ARGUMENT]

·         The Christ of history is impossible to explain apart from the Father.

  • How do you explain the:

a.       Virgin birth,

b.      Sinless life,

c.       Miracles,

d.      Teachings,

e.       Death,

f.       Burial

g.      Resurrection

h.      Ascension?

John 1:1-3

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.

John 1:14-18

And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15John bore witness of Him, and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.' " 16For of His fulness we have all received, and grace upon grace. 17For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. 18No man has seen God at any time; the only begotten God, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.

John 14:6-9

Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me. 7"If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him." 8Philip said to Him, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us." 9Jesus said to him, "Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how do you say, 'Show us the Father'?

1 Tim. 3:16
And by common confession great is the mystery of godliness:

·         He who was revealed in the flesh,

·         Was vindicated in the Spirit,

·         Beheld by angels,

·         Proclaimed among the nations,

·         Believed on in the world,

·         Taken up in glory.

THE SCRIPTURES SURPASS ALL OTHER WRITINGS [BIBLIOPOLICAL ARGUMENT]

·         The scriptures surpass all other writings as being divinely inspired.

·         It is impossible for them to have been produced by mere humanity.

·         They testify of a higher intelligence who sovereignty guided he writers in their work.

CONGRUITY SIMPLE MEANS AGREEMENT [ARGUMENT OF CONGRUITY]

·         Congruity simple means agreement, correspondence, harmony.

·         The nine previous arguments are all in agreement.

·         There is a correspondence and harmony among all of them.

·         There is not one argument that brings a discordant note but all together they from a harmonious whole.

·         Man is left with totally without excuse as to the fact that God exists.

NON-CHRISTIAN VIEW OF GOD

THEISTIC VIEWS

a. Pantheistic View  “pan” = all “theos” = God

•It is the belief that God is all and all is God.
•God is in nature and doesn't exist apart from nature.

Makes Nature god and misses the God of nature

b. Materialistic Pantheism
Makes matter eternal and misses the God who made matter

1. Hylozoism
It holds that all matter besides having physical properties also has the principle of life in it.  HYLOZOISM Makes a principal of life god and misses the God who is the source of life.

2. Neutralism
Ultimate reality is neither mind nor matter, but a neutral stuff of which mind and matter are but appearances or aspects.  NEUTRALISM – makes some neutral substance god and misses God the creator of all substances

3. Idealism
Ultimate reality is of the nature of the mind.   The world is the product of the mind, either of the individual mind or of the infinite mind.  Everything exists only in the mind.  IDEALISM Makes the mind god and misses the God who is a real person having a perfect mind.

4. Philosophical Mysticism
This is a philosophy that seeks to discover the nature of realty through the process of thought or spiritual intuition.  The only god to be known is the god within.  Philosophical Mysticism – Makes man himself god and misses the God who made all men.

Pantheism – Makes Everything god and misses the God of Everything

Polytheism – Makes many gods and misses the one true God

Dualism – Makes good and evil two equal gods in conflict and fails to discover a good god who will judge all evil

Deism - Presents an absentee god, a god who had nothing to do with anything he created and misses the omnipresent and omnipotent God.

THE ATHEISTIC VIEWS

a. Practical Atheism – Believes there may be a god but lives as if there is none.  Has no interest in religion because of hypocrisy among those professing religion

b. Dogmatic Atheism– declares openly their disbelief in a god of any kind.

c. Virtual Atheism – generates abstract definitions of God to try to account for the world of life.  “Social consciousness” or the “Unknowable” or “the moral order of the universe.” God become so obscure this belief is virtually atheism.

d. Critical Atheism: Denies the existence of god on the Grounds that no one can prove or demonstrate the existence of God

e. Classical Atheism – The Denying the God or Gods of Some Particular Religion

f. Rational Atheism – puts reason on the throne instead of faith.  Reason is the only source of knowledge

AGNOSTICISM - holds that one cannot know whether or not God exists.  Neither denies nor affirms the existence of God. Holds the one cannot know whether God exist or not.  It  neither confirms nor denies the existence of God.  I cannot know or I know nothing.  I can’s have knowledge as to the existence or nature of God and the universe.  It is willful ignorance.

THE GNOSTIC A “Knowing One” Who Says I “Know It All”

POSITIVISM – There is nothing true beyond observed facts.  God cannot be examined as fact therefore He doesn’t exist.

PRAGMATISM – There is no special revelation of God, and the human reason is incompetent to discover God if He does exist.

EXISTENTIALISM - The philosophy that the individual can exercise his free will and do what ever he likes in a purposeless universe.  It is a “no-morality” philosophy because of a “no god” view.

THE NATURE OF GOD SPIRIT, LIGHT, LOVE, CONSUMING FIRE

A Person: An individual of specified character: The composite of characteristics that make up an individual personality known as the self. Theology; The separate individualities of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, as distinguished from the essence of the Godhead that unites them.  Someone or something that exists independently: individual, being, entity, somebody, person, organism.

Personality A person's emotional, intellectual, and moral qualities: personality, humor, cast, character, complexion, constitution, disposition, identity, make-up, nature, persona, spirit, and temperament.

We Christians believe unless God reveals himself to us we remain in darkness.   Man’s wisdom is foolishness when it comes to knowing God.

Ephes. 4:17-18
This I say therefore, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, 18being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart;

Matthew 11:27
"All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son, except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father, except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.

1 Cor. 1:19-21
For it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And the cleverness of the clever I will set aside.“ 20 Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.

·         We believe He has revealed himself in the scriptures.  Man must accept this self-revelation of Christ or we can’t know God.   God Is A Consuming Fire, Spirit, Light, and Love.

God is a Spirit.

A spirit does not have flesh and bone therefore God is invisible.

Deut. 4:15-19
"So watch yourselves carefully, since you did not see any form on the day the Lord spoke to you at Horeb from the midst of the fire, . .

Exodus 33:20
But He said, "You cannot see My face, for no man can see Me and live!"

John 1:18
No man has seen God at any time . . .

Explain: “If I be lifted up I’ll draw all men unto me.”

·         This why God forbade any visible images being formed of what men think he looks like.

·         When we say God is a Sprit this doesn’t mean he is impersonal force or entity.  He is a person, with self-consciousness, self-determination, will, Intelligence and feeling.

John 4:20-24
. . . .  23"But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. 24"God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."

Genesis 1:2
. . . . The Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.

2 Cor. 3:17
now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

1 Cor. 2:11
for who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man, which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God.

When we speak of god as being a spirit, this does not mean Hi is some impersonal force of entity.  He is a person with self-conscienceousness, self-determination, will, intelligence and feelings.

John 4:20-24
"Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship." 21Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall you worship the Father. 22"You worship that which you do not know; we worship that which we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23"But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. 24"God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."

Genesis 1:2
And the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.

2 Cor. 3:17
Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

1 Cor. 2:11
For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man, which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God.

God is light

That light is often refers to the majesty of His glory.   He dwells in a light that is unapproachable whom no man has seen or can see.

1 Tim. 6:15-16
Which He will bring about at the proper time-- He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords; 16who alone possesses immortality and dwells in unapproachable light; whom no man has seen or can see. To Him be honor and eternal dominion! Amen.

·         God does not have light He is light.  Light is absolutely pure, impossible to defile.  As light, God is eternal, immortal and invisible.

1 Tim. 1:17
Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

God is Love

·         This is the very heard of God’s nature.  God does nokt have love he is love.  Love involves the grace, mercy, kindness, goodness and benevolence of God toward all His creation

John 3:16
"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.

1 John 4:17
By this, love is perfected with us, that we may have confidence in the Day of Judgment; because as He is, so also are we in this world.

God is a Consuming Fire

·         This describes the Holiness and absolute righteousness of God’s nature as it relates to His judgment against sin.  Fire is not God but God is a consuming fire.  This relates to the definition that God is light.  The most frequent symbol used of God in the bible is that of fire.

Hebrews 12:29
For our God is a consuming fire.

Lamp of fire Genesis 15:17 Abraham
Burning bush Moses Exodus 3:1-5
The altar of fire Elijah 1 Kings 18:24,38
The coals of fire Isaiah 6:6,7

Psalm 139:7-12

Where can I go from Thy Spirit?  Or where can I flee from Thy presence? 8 If I ascend to heaven, Thou art there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, Thou art there. 9 If I take the wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, 10 Even there Thy hand will lead me, And Thy right hand will lay hold of me. 11 If I say, "Surely the darkness will overwhelm me, And the light around me will be night," 12 Even the darkness is not dark to Thee, And the night is as bright as the day.  Darkness and light are alike to Thee.

[10] Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. [11] Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves. [12] "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. [13] And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. [14] If you ask anything in My name, I will do it. [15] "If you love Me, keep My commandments. [16] And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever-- [17] the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.  [NKJV]
