BB – 6 Baptism in Water

Lesson #6

What the Bible Says

· To understand what baptism means, we must understand what the Bible says.

· Water baptism testifies of what happened to us when we came to Christ. Greek word “baptizo” means to dip, immerse, and submerge.

Example: Dyeing a piece of Cloth
The old cloth is completely changed. It takes on a different color, and perhaps a different utility other than the original design. Every thread and part of the fabric changed, not on the surface only, but through and through. Any one looking at the new cloth gets a very different image.

Romans 6:1-11 (NKJV) 1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? 3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. 7 For he who has died has been freed from sin. 8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, 9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. 10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. 11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

· When baptized into Jesus we are baptized into his death. Vs 3

· We are buried with him through baptism into death. Vs 4

· We are raised from the dead by the glory of the Father. Vs 4

· We walk in newness of life. As we are united together in death, we shall be like him in the resurrection. Vs 4b, 5

· Our old man has been crucified that the body of sin might be done away with and we are no longer slaves to sin. Vs 6

· If we have died and are dead, we are freed from sin. Vs 7

· If we died with Christ, knowing he lives - we live also. Vs 8

· He died to sin once; and it was for everyone. Death has no more dominion over Him. Vs 9

· For all we consider ourselves dead to sin and alive to God. Vs 10

Who should be baptized?

· New believers in Christ, not babies who cannot yet decide.

· Baptism always followed repentance.

Mark 16:16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

John 3:23 Now John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there. And they came and were baptized.

Mark 4:10 But when He was alone, those around Him with the twelve asked Him about the parable.

Acts 8:38-39 So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. 39Now when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his way rejoicing.

Who should do the actual act of baptizing?

· Any responsible believer.

John 4:2 (though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples),

Matthew 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Acts 9:10 Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus named Ananias; and to him the Lord said in a vision, "Ananias." And he said, "Here I am, Lord."

Acts 9:18 Immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he received his sight at once; and he arose and was baptized.

Baptized into Christ

· What does that mean?

Romans 4:11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while still uncircumcised, that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they are uncircumcised, that righteousness might be imputed to them also,

Initiated into the body of Christ – and not into a denomination or specific church

Sealed – Like the circumcision of Abraham a seal of being in agreement with God.

Romans 4:11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while still uncircumcised, that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they are uncircumcised, that righteousness might be imputed to them also,

Cleansed - like taking a bath for physical hygiene

Baptism deals with the dirt of sin in the soul.

1 Peter 3:21 (NKJV) There is also an antitype which now saves us--baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

Titus 3:5 not by works of righteousness, which we have done, but according to His mercy, He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,

· The New Birth and Baptism go together.

· Confess Christ as Lord.

Acts 22:16 And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.'

· Like a soldier or a policeman putting on a uniform and badge.

Galatians 3:27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

· We become a representative of Christ, unified with Him in his death.

Romans 6:4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
