Doctrine of Angels #6-Bible Doctrine

INTRODUCTION

The doctrine of Angelology has been a neglected doctrine for the following reason.

  1. Ignorance concerning what the scripture teaches on the subject.

  1. Unbelief in the supernatural including the existence of Angels (which was the doctrine of the Sadducees),

  1. Fear or superstition concerning the unseen realm of spirit beings.

  1. Undue adoration, prayer to and worship of angels by some.

The solution to this problem is to be found in a thorough searching of the Word of God.

Relying upon the opinions or subjective experiences of man is dangerous.  The only sure, inspired and infallible revelation upon which we can wholly depend is the Word of God.  All other teachings, subjective experiences or visions of angels, must be tested by it.

THE EXISTENCE OF ANGELS

The Scriptures reveal that God has an everlasting kingdom, and in this kingdom there are created spirits being called angels.

The Greek word for angel is “angelos” which also means “Messenger”.  These words are used of God, of men, and of the angelic beings.  Only the surrounding context will clarify which is being referred to, but in most instances it is the angelic beings.

In both the Old and New Testaments there are accounts of angels ministering to the people of God.  The Lord Jesus Christ Himself spoke often of the angels, and was also ministered to by them.

THE ORDER OF THE ANGELS

God is a King who has a universal Kingdom.  Is this kingdom there is a divine order.  This order seems to involve the Eternal Godhead as Father, son and Holy Spirit and the various orders of angelic beings.  Scripture speaks of archangels, principalities, powers, seraphim cherubim, the Angel of the Lord and then also the myriads of angels.

Then he said, "Do you know why I have come to you? And now I must return to fight with the prince of Persia; and when I have gone forth, indeed the prince of Greece will come. 21But I will tell you what is noted in the Scripture of Truth. (No one upholds me against these, except Michael your prince.
Ephes. 3:10
to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places,
Col. 2:15
Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.

THE MANIFESTATIONS OF THE GODHEAD IN ANGELIC FORM

It seems apparent in the Old Testament that the Godhead was revealed in angelic form occasionally and was called angels or men.  God assumed the form of an angelic manifestation until the incarnation, when the Son would take upon Himself the form of Man.  Concerning the manifestation of the eternal Son of God in angelic form, there seems to be no doubt among expositors.

THE FATHER (Genesis 18: 1-22)
  1. The three men called “Adonai” Plural Hebrew word for “Lords” appeared to Abraham in the heat of the day.

  1. Abraham stood before one of these angels called “the Lord” (Verses 22,33) and made intercession for Sodom and Gomorrah, and especially for his nephew’s family.

  1. At this time two of these angels went to Sodom to save Lot and his family (Genesis 19:1)

  1. Some Hebrew believers see these three angels as a manifestation of the Godhead.

  1. In Genesis 19:14,16,24 THE ANGELS ARE CALLED “LORD”.  The two angels, also called “men” referred to the fact that “The Lord rained fire and brimstone from the LORD out of heaven”

(Compare this with Psalm 110:1 A Psalm of David.  The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”)

  1. Many expositors hold that the angel before which Abraham stood and made intercession was the Father God manifest in angelic form.

THE SON (Judges 6:11-22; 13:3-21)

  1. Frequently found in the scripture is an angel referred to as the Angel of the Lord or the Jehovah angel.

  1. This angel was a manifestation of the eternal Son of God before His incarnation.

  1. These manifestations are called Theophanies or Christophanies.  The Lord Jesus was the “Messenger (Angel) of the Covenant “ (Malachi 3:1  "Behold, I send My messenger, And he will prepare the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, Will suddenly come to His temple, Even the Messenger of the covenant, In whom you delight. Behold, He is coming," Says the Lord of hosts.)

THE HOLY SPIRIT

A.     The Holy Spirit was manifested in the Cloudy Pillar, the Shekinah Glory in the form of a Dove, in some references in the form of an angel.  If the three angels that appeared to Abraham were the Godhead certainly one would be the Holy Spirit. (Genesis18: 1-4)  The Lord spoke to Moses concerning the Angel, which was to lead Israel to Canaan land.  The name of God was in Him, and He would not pardon Israel’s transgressions or sins.

(Exodus 23:20-25
"Behold, I send an Angel before you to keep you in the way and to bring you into the place which I have prepared. 21Beware of Him and obey His voice; do not provoke Him, for He will not pardon your transgressions; for My name is in Him. 22But if you indeed obey His voice and do all that I speak, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries. 23For My Angel will go before you and bring you in to the Amorites and the Hittites and the Perizzites and the Canaanites and the Hivites and the Jebusites; and I will cut them off. 24You shall not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do according to their works; but you shall utterly overthrow them and completely break down their sacred pillars. 25So you shall serve the Lord your God, and He will bless your bread and your water. And I will take sickness away from the midst of you.)

Matthew 12:31-32
"Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. 32Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.

B.      The language concerning not pardoning transgressions certainly is applicable to the Holy Sprit.

Isaiah 63:9-10
In all their affliction He was afflicted, And the Angel of His Presence saved them; In His love and in His pity He redeemed them; And He bore them and carried them All the days of old. 10 But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit; So He turned Himself against them as an enemy, and He fought against them.

C.     Isaiah speaks of the angel of His presence, which can certainly be identified with the Holy Ghost.
