BB- 16 Grace vs Law

Lesson #16

In the world, there are really only two religions; they are Law and Grace

· The Law (referring to the Law God gave to Moses for Israel to obey and live by.

John 1:17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

Romans 8:3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh,

· The Law required a life style and an attitude that we could not live up to; we just did not have the ability in our flesh. In order to really obey the Law in our heart and not mechanical, a change of heart was necessary.

Example (the mule):
You can wash a mule, trim his mane, polish his hoofs, and make his coat glisten; but when you put him on the racetrack he is still going to lope around the track. His gate will now change because he is a mule. In order to make him run like a horse you must somehow turn him into a horse. It would take “an inside job”. That is the same with us. We were born in sin, which makes us sinners from birth. We had a nature that sins, in order for us to change it took an “inside job”. Joining an organization such as a church denomination or fellowship will not suffice; it takes God making a change in you!

John 3:77 Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.'

How do you know you are living under the law?

Answer: When you have, a mind set that you, have to earn the blessings of God. If you think, you can pray enough or sacrifice, enough to earn your salvation then you are living under the law and not grace.

In order to live according to the Grace of God by faith you must understand the sacrifice that Jesus gave has already paid the price needed for you to come to the throne of God with boldness and say Abba Father. You must die to the sort of thinking that you have to be good enough or work hard enough to receive all the benefits of salvation. Your righteousness or new relationship with God came through the sacrifice of Jesus, not because of anything you did

· “It requires death of your former spouse (the Law) before you can be attached to your new spouse (Grace).
Romans 7:1-6 Or do you not know, brethren (for I speak to those who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives? 2 For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband. 3 So then if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man. 4 Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another--to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God. 5 For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death. 6 But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.

Grace

The definition for Grace: undeserved favor or a gift from God that we can’t earn, in other words its something for nothing. Don Kangas, A good brother in the Lord, also gives this definition: “the ability to know and do the will of God” which is also correct

· Grace brings a better hope
Hebrews 7:18-19 For on the one hand there is an annulling of the former commandment because of its weakness and unprofitableness, 19for the law made nothing perfect; on the other hand, there is the bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God

· Grace requires higher standards than the Law does

Matthew 5:27-28 "You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not commit adultery.' 28But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

· Grace empowers us or gives us the ability to do what is required.
Philippians 2:13 For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.

· No man has ever deserved God’s mercy. Even the faith required to receive that gift has to come from God.

Romans 12:3 (NKJV) 3 For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Acts 11:18 When they heard these things they became silent; and they glorified God, saying, "Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life."

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,

John 1:16 And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace.

None of us wants to commit suicide

· This is exactly happens to believers, who have been saved by grace return to rules and regulations for their righteousness Commit Spiritual Suicide. This is one of the biggest causes of deadness and defeat among Christians.

2 Peter 2:20-22 (NKJV) 20 For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning. 21 For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them. 22 But it has happened to them according to the true proverb: "A dog returns to his own vomit," and, "a sow, having washed, to her wallowing in the mire."
Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

Titus 2:11-12 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age,

Galatians 3:3 Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?

Why do people start a race with the ability to continue, stop before they finish?

· It’s the same reason many refuse the grace of God in salvation. They prefer to trust their own righteousness. It gives them something to brag about. Look at all my work that God has blessed.

· Grace takes away all cause for boasting and throws us completely on God’s mercy.

Titus 3:5 not by works of righteousness, which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,

· God must get all the glory for the Grace in your life!

When Jesus died and raised again, our death to the law also has taken place [at the cross]
Our old husband the law is now dead, now we can now marry your real love; God’s grace.

Jesus is alive and ready to receive you. No Bigamy allowed, You can’t have them both.

Romans 7:1-3 Or do you not know, brethren (for I speak to those who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives? 2For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband. 3So then if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man.

· You have not been so deep in Sin that the supply of Grace will run out. His supply of Grace is adequate and affordable.

2 Corinthians 12:9 And He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you,

· You must die to your own selfish desires, to get the Grace. It takes “an inside job.”

Romans 5:17 For if by the one man's offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.)

Ephesians 1:7-8 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace 8which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence,

2 Corinthians 12:9 And He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness." Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
