BB – 7 Baptism in the Spirit

Lesson #7

This lesson is especially long but very important. Do not hesitate to spend extra time in teaching it, so the believers will have a good foundation in who the Holy Spirit is and what part He wants to play in their individual lives and the life of the local church. Many groups of believers are weak in the faith because they are depending upon their own abilities, instead of allowing the Holy Spirit to have his way.

You Do Not Receive IT [some uses it when talking of the Spirit] You Receive HIM

Who is the HOLY SPIRIT?

· From the scriptures, we can prove that the Holy Spirit is a living, moving member of the Trinity.

· The Holy Spirit has been at work since before time began.

· He is not a far off, but works in our personal lives. We will learn the Baptism in the Holy Ghost is an experience distinct from the experience of salvation.

Acts 8:12-17 But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized. [13] Then Simon himself also believed; and when he was baptized he continued with Philip, and was amazed, seeing the miracles and signs, which were done. [14] Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, [15] who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit [16] For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. [17] Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. [NKJV]

Selected Scripture for a more in-depth study: John 20:22; Acts 1:2,5,8; 2: 4,33,38; 4:31; 6:5; 7: 51,55; 8: 18-19; 9:17; 10:44-47; 13:52; 19:2-6;

The Holy Spirit in Prophecy

· Joel’s Old Testament prophecy is fulfilled at Pentecost in the New Testament.
Acts 2:1-4 (NKJV) 1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Joel 2:28-29 (NKJV) 28 "And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions. 29 And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.

· Peter was preaching on the day of Pentecost.

Acts 2:16 (NKJV) 16 But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

· The Holy Spirit is seen in the Old Testament. (Creation)

Genesis 1:1-3 (NKJV) 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3 Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.

· He is seen at the baptism of Jesus.

Matthew 3:13-17 (NKJV) 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. 14 And John tried to prevent Him, saying, "I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?" 15 But Jesus answered and said to him, "Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed Him. 16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."
Description of the Person of the Holy Spirit

· The Holy Spirit Can be grieved.

Ephesians 4:30 (NKJV) 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

· The Holy Spirit possesses knowledge.

Nehemiah 9:20 (NKJV) 20 You also gave Your good Spirit to instruct them, And did not withhold Your manna from their mouth, And gave them water for their thirst. Romans 8:27 (NKJV) 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 15:30 (NKJV) 30 Now I beg you, brethren, through the Lord Jesus Christ, and through the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in prayers to God for me, 1 Corinthians 2:9-11 (NKJV) 9 But as it is written: "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him." 10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.

· The Holy Spirit exercises a will.

1 Corinthians 12:11 (NKJV) 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

· The Holy Spirit has a mind.

Romans 8:27 (NKJV) 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

· The Holy Spirit loves.

Romans 15:30 (NKJV) 30 Now I beg you, brethren, through the Lord Jesus Christ, and through the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in prayers to God for me,

· The Holy Spirit gives instruction.

Nehemiah 9:20 (NKJV) 20 You also gave Your good Spirit to instruct them, And did not withhold Your manna from their mouth, And gave them water for their thirst

Symbolic Pictures of the Holy Spirit

· Fire
Isaiah 4:4 (NKJV) 4 When the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and purged the blood of Jerusalem from her midst, by the spirit of judgment and by the spirit of burning, Acts 2:3 (NKJV) 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. Matthew 3:11 (NKJV) 11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

· Wind

John 3:8 (NKJV) 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit." Acts 2:3 (NKJV) 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.

· Water

John 7:38-39 (NKJV) 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water." 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. 1 Corinthians 10:4 (NKJV) 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.

· Oil

Matthew 25:3 (NKJV) 3 Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them, Psalms 89:20 (NKJV) 20 I have found My servant David; With My holy oil I have anointed him, 1 John 2:27 (NKJV) 27 But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.

· Dove

Matthew 3:16 (NKJV) 16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him.

The Holy Spirit Seen In the Life of Jesus

· Jesus was conceived and born by the Spirit.

Luke 1:35 (NKJV) 35 And the angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.

· Jesus is filled with the Spirit after baptism.
Luke 3:21-22 (NKJV) 21 When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. 22 And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, "You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased."

· Jesus is led by the Spirit into the wilderness.

Matthew 4:1 (NKJV) 1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
· Jesus ministered through the Holy Spirit.

Luke 4:18 (NKJV) 18 "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed;

The Holy Spirit Seen in the Ministry of Jesus

· Jesus cast out demons by the power of the Spirit.

Matthew 12:28 (NKJV) 28 But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you.

· Jesus offered Himself for our atonement.

Hebrews 9:14 (NKJV) 14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

· Jesus was raised from the dead by the Spirit.

Romans 8:11 (NKJV) 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

· Jesus gave apostles commandments by the Spirit.

Acts 1:2 (NKJV) 2 until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, Acts 1:4 (NKJV) 4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, "which," He said, "you have heard from Me;

· Jesus as a man was filled with the Holy Spirit.

Luke 3:21-22 When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. 22 And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, "You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased."

The Ministry of the Holy Spirit

· Jesus baptizes the believer in the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:4 (NKJV) 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
· He comes upon us.

Acts 1:8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

· He endues us with power.

Luke 24:49 Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high."

· He seals us in Himself.

Ephesians. 1:13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,

· Streams of living water will flow that is strength for the believer and life for the nations.

John 7:38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water."

His Infilling [Baptism] of the Holy Spirit Gives Power and Strength.

· He makes Jesus increasingly real.

John 15:26 "But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.

· He gives power and boldness to witness.

Acts 1:8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

· He guides us in truth.

John 16:13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

· He gives the believer a prayer language.

Acts 10:46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered,

· He makes your praying effective.

Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

· He leads you to make the right decisions.

Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

· You will experience new joy as you fulfill your service to God.

Acts 13:52 And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

· You will be equipped with spiritual gifts (power tools) to do your job in his Kingdom.

1 Corinthians 12:8-11 8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
