BB – 8 The Body of Christ

Lesson #8
Now that you have declared your faith in Jesus Christ and have made him the Lord of your life, you are part of a body of believers.

Try to answer the following questions before you go on with the lesson. The answers should become clearer as you continue in this study.

· What is the body that you are now a part of?
· What is “the Church”?
· Is it the gathering of believers where you attend?
· Is the church a building where you meet?
· Could it be in another nation?
· How can you join?

Getting along together in God’s family may be your greatest challenge after you have walked in your newfound faith for a while. It is important to understand that most of your growth and development as a Christian will now come through your relationship with other believers

· Christ is the head of the Church.

Colossians 1:18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.

· We Are (and He Has) a Universal Body.

Matthew 16:18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her,

· A Local Congregation

Matthew 18:17 And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.

1 Corinthians 1:2 To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all who in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:

Romans 16:5 Likewise greet the church that is in their house. Greet my beloved Epaenetus, who is the first fruits of Achaia to Christ.

Matthew 18:20 For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them."

· Jesus has only “one body.”

Ephesians 4:4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling;

· Open your heart to all believers without considering the label or denomination.

Ephesians 6:18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints--

· One day all will be united.

John 17:20-21 "I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; 21that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.

· The Bible does not JUST say go to church, live a good life and be a good Christian; you now are part of a body, with others depending on you. You are a Christian and now belong to one another.

Romans 12:5 so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another.

Ephesians 4:2-3 with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, 3endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

· You have just received new understanding about what the words “body” and “church” mean. Some questions might include:

What am I supposed to do? How am I supposed to Act?

· Being a part of the church is looking at the life that Jesus lived. You will not find any selfishness in how He lived.

· Give yourself. Jesus gave Himself in a big way. So should you.

Luke 6:38 Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you."

2 Corinthians 8:5 And not only as we had hoped, but they first gave themselves to the Lord, and then to us by the will of God.

· Totally commit to the Church with all your heart.

Luke 14:33 So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.

Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

Matthew 25:40 And the King will answer and say to them, 'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.'

1 John 4:20 If someone says, "I love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?

· Be faithful to others.

Hebrews 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

· Share your life, time, gifts, money, and talents.

Hebrews 13:16 But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

· Submit to elders, leaders, shepherds of the flock, and one another.

Hebrews 13:17 Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.
