The Gap Theory (The Pentateuch lesson 1a)

The Gap Theory is only a theory.  In verse one God creates  the heavens and earth and then in verse two it seems incomplete and chaotic, Did God create everything perfect and entire, and then destroy it when Satan fell.  Does Genesis 1:2 tells us a re-creation story? You be the judge, there are some who think so!

Genesis 1:1-2 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. [2] The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.  [NKJV]

Isaiah 45:18 For thus says the Lord, Who created the heavens, Who is God, Who formed the earth and made it, Who has established it, Who did not create it in vain, Who formed it to be inhabited: "I am the Lord, and there is no other.  [NKJV]

Genesis 3:14-15 So the Lord God said to the serpent: "Because you have done this, You are cursed more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you shall go, And you shall eat dust  All the days of your life. [15] And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head,  And you shall bruise His heel." [NKJV]

This prophecy is to the Prince of Tyre,

Ezekiel 28:2 "Son of man, say to the prince of Tyre, 'Thus says the Lord God: "Because your heart is lifted up, And you say, 'I am a god, I sit in the seat of gods, In the midst of the seas, 'Yet you are a man, and not a god, Though you set your heart as the heart of a god  [NKJV]

Ezekiel 28: 11-19

a.       vs. 11-12  note in verse 2 he is talking to a prince.  Here a King probably the highest place in government next to God

Ezekiel 28:11, 12 Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying,  "Son of man, take up a lamentation for the king of Tyre, and say to him, 'Thus says the Lord God:   "You were the seal of perfection, Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.  [NKJV]

b.      Located in Eden the Garden of God, appears to have been an mineral garden.

c.       He could have been the leader of praise around the throne of God. (The workmanship of timbrels and pipes were prepared for him on the day he was created.)  He could have been with God up on the mount Sinai.

Ezekiel 28:13  You were in Eden, the garden of God; Every precious stone was your covering:  The sardius, topaz, and diamond, Beryl, onyx, and jasper, Sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold.  The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes Was prepared for you on the day you were created.  14 "You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; You were on the holy mountain of God; You walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones.  [NKJV]

Exodus 24:10  and they saw the God of Israel. And there was under His feet as it were a paved work of sapphire stone, and it was like the very heavens in its clarity.  [NKJV]

Exodus 24:17  The sight of the glory of the Lord was like a consuming fire on the top of the mountain in the eyes of the children of Israel.  [NKJV]

d.      He was perfect until iniquity was found in him  He perverted what God had made.

Ezekiel 28:15  You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, Till iniquity was found in you.  [NKJV]

e.       Much merchandise and authority was at his disposal. Vs 16

Ezekiel 28:16  "By the abundance of your trading You became filled with violence within,  And you sinned; Therefore I cast you as a profane thing Out of the mountain of God; And I destroyed you, O covering cherub, From the midst of the fiery stones. [NKJV]

f.       His heart was lifted up failed to be led by the spirit

Ezekiel 28:17-19 "Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; You corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor; I cast you to the ground, I laid you before kings, That they might gaze at you.  [18] "You defiled your sanctuaries By the multitude of your iniquities, By the iniquity of your trading; Therefore I brought fire from your midst; It devoured you, And I turned you to ashes upon the earth  In the sight of all who saw you.  [19] All who knew you among the peoples are astonished at you; You have become a horror, And shall be no more forever." ' " [NKJV]

g.      A lesson about Authority and the Novice:

Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.  [NKJV]

Philip. 2:13  for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.  [NKJV]

1 Tim. 3:6  not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil.  [NKJV]

            h. Rebellion started here on earth – I will ascend.

Isaiah 14:12-15 "How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!  How you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations! [13] For you have said in your heart: 'I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation  On the farthest sides of the north; [14] I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.' [15] Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, To the lowest depths of the Pit.  [NKJV]

i.        Stars equal angels

Job 38:7 When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy? [NKJV]

Rev. 1:20  The mystery of the seven stars which you saw in My right hand, and the seven golden lampstands: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands which you saw are the seven churches.  [NKJV]

j.        Government and authority over the host of God.

k.      Clouds equal Glory of God

l.        He wasn’t satisfied to share – He wanted to replace God and become supreme ruler.

James 4:6 But He gives more grace. Therefore He says:  "God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble." 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.  [NKJV]

Proverbs 3:34 Surely He scorns the scornful, But gives grace to the humble.  [NKJV]

m.    When Satan was cast down, Did God destroy where he was dwelling?  The earth the garden of Eden?

Jeremiah 4:23-26 I beheld the earth, and indeed it was without form, and void; And the heavens, they had no light.  [24] I beheld the mountains, and indeed they trembled, And all the hills moved back and forth. [25] I beheld, and indeed there was no man, And all the birds of the heavens had fled. [26] I beheld, and indeed the fruitful land was a wilderness, And all its cities were broken down At the presence of the Lord, By His fierce anger.  [NKJV]

2 Peter 3:5-7 For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, [6] by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. [7] But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.  [NKJV]

Genesis 1:2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.  [NKJV]

n.      Science tells us of violent convulsions in the earth.

o.      The Sun was extinguished and stars couldn’t be seen.

p.      Clouds descended, ice formed, Glaciers of huge amounts of ice formed almost instantly.

q.      Existing animals were instantly frozen and preserved.

r.        Geologists tell us that the marks of glaciers are found in equatorial Africa.

s.       How long Satan roamed the ruined universe isn’t known.

t.        The earth waits deliverance:

Romans 8:18-22 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. [19] For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. [20] For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; [21] because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. [22] For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now.  [NKJV]

u.      We escaped through Christ

2 Peter 1:4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.  [NKJV]
